Are You Drinking Coffee Picked by Children
A recent report by the U.S Department
of Labor states that child labor is a major component of foreign coffee imported into the United States.
Coffee farmers in many foreign countries are paid so little that they have to put their children to work to survive. A typical Central American farm child will go to school through the first or second grade and then be pulled out for farm work.
The report lists the following countries that are using child labor in the coffee fields:
Columbia | Mexico |
Ivory Coast | Nicaragua |
Dominican Republic | Panama |
El Salvador | Sierra Leone |
Guatemala | Tanzania |
Guinea | Uganda |
Honduras | |
Kenya |
